Hair Salon – Using Good Shampoos

Are you aware of what is in the shampoo that you are putting in your hair? When the hairdresser at your hair salon shampoos your hair, why don’t you look at the back of the bottle to make sure the ingredients will not harm your hair? Most people are not aware that there are certain ingredients in shampoos that are actually considered toxic and that you should try to avoid at all costs. You need to look at the back of your shampoo bottles before using them, just like you do before you buy the food you consume.

Hair SalonsThree Different Types of Shampoos Used in Hair Salons

There are three different types of shampoos that you can purchase yourself and that are used in professional hair salons. The three kinds of shampoos are for colored hair, surfactants, and preservatives. Do not be impressed by good advertising, pretty designs on the bottles, or the aroma of the shampoo, none of these things tell you what you are really putting in your hair. Those are just things to try to sell you on their products, beware of this.

Toxic Ingredients in your Shampoos

There are five different ingredients that you need to look out for when purchasing shampoo because these ingredients are considered toxic. The toxic ingredients found in shampoos are Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Diethanolamine, Propylene Glycol, Parabens, and Dioxane.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is the ingredient in shampoo that causes it to foam up and it is also a very cheap ingredient. Also known as SLS, the ingredient is found in the soaps you have at home, in car washes, and in the degreasing products for your car. The FDA has reported that SLS can cause eye irritation, scalp irritation, swelling of hands, arms, and face, and tangled, split, and frizzy hair. Other symptoms that SLS can include health implications like menopause systems and PMS, decreased male fertility, and can increase chances of female cancers like breast cancer.

  • SLS can be found in:
  • Shampoos
  • Soaps
  • ToothpasteHair Salons
  • Bubble-baths
  • Laundry detergent
  • Washing-up liquid / Dish Soap
  • Mascara
  • Shave Cream
  • Body Wash
  • Fabric Glue
  • Sun Cream
  • Moisture Lotion / Moisturizers
  • Skin Cleanser
  • Mouthwash
  • Stain Remover
  • Carpet Cleaner
  • Children’s Soaps / Shampoos

Parabens

Parabens are groups of compounds that are used as preservatives in cosmetic and pharmaceutical products. They are also used in the food industry. Parabens are usually found in almost all of the same products listed above. Research studies show that parabens sometimes mimic the activity of estrogen in the body’s cell. Estrogenic activity is linked with forms of breast cancer and parabens have been found in breast tumors.

Make sure to stay away from products that contain some of these toxic ingredients. When you go to your hair salon, ask the hairdresser if the shampoo used has any toxic ingredients and make sure to look at the bottle to see the ingredients if the hairdresser is unsure. Not only will you hair look better when you use products with these toxins, but there are health benefits as well for steering clear of these ingredients.
